Despite its remote location, it attracts a large number of people during the summer months.
Gerontas - Milos destination guide content

Gerontas is a beach that looks like it belongs to another world. It is on the far southwestern edge of Milos, where cliffs drop steeply into the sea and the land becomes quiet and wild. It's not easy to find Gerontas. It asks you to give it some time, some patience and a willingness to leave the paved roads you know behind. But for those who make the trip, the reward is clear: a landscape of raw, elemental beauty that is untouched and unforgettable. The island's volcanic past is written in stone at Gerontas. The colours of the earth is white, grey, honey, charcoal and soft gold, come together in rough layers that rise high above a beach of dark volcanic sand. The sea changes from aquamarine to sapphire in just a few metres. It is deep and bright and where one of Milos's most famous natural features, a long arch of white rock that goes from cliff to water, stands like a door between land and sea. There aren't a lot of people on this beach and it's not organised. Gerontas is a quiet, big and very peaceful place. The only sounds you hear are the wind, the waves and your own footsteps.

A Landscape Shaped by Fire, Wind and Time

Gerontas is all about volcanoes and oceans. The cliffs that surround the bay are made of volcanic rock that formed millions of years ago from layers of ash, pumice and hardened lava. The wind shaped these cliffs into smooth folds and sweeping curves over hundreds of years and the waves dug out caves and openings along the shore. The natural rock arch that defines the beach today came from the long-ago collaboration of air, water and stone. The arch rises gracefully from the water, making a stone bridge between the land and the sea. Light from the sun shines through the bottom of it, making the water's surface look different as it moves. When the weather is nice, swimmers can easily swim under it and into a quiet world where cliffs rise straight up and the water below feels deep and never-ending.

The difference here is amazing:

  • White stone

  • Dark sand from a volcano

  • Blue water that glows with light

  • Gerontas is one of the few beaches that really captures the volcanic soul of Milos.

How to Get There: A Trip into Quiet

To get to Gerontas, you have to leave the smooth, paved roads behind and take a dirt road that goes over empty hills. The land is open and sparse, with low shrubs and wind-shaped hills. There are no signs of growth, like tavernas, stores, or loud beach bars. The only things you can see are the wide sky, the faraway sea and the feeling of going deeper into the island's quiet areas. A short, rocky footpath goes down from the end of the road. It's not hard, but you have to pay attention to the loose stones, uneven ground and steep steps that erosion has carved out over time. And then, all of a sudden, the path opens. The cliffs open up. The bay shows up. The water looks like glass that has been painted.

Mood and Atmosphere

Gerontas has something that is becoming less and less common in the Cyclades: quiet, open space. There is no loud music, umbrellas, or constant movement on this beach. The air is calm and relaxed. People who come to visit speak softly. The waves softly hit the rock walls. The wind moves between the cliffs in long, slow waves. Even in the summer, Gerontas still feels far away. People come here not to be seen or to hang out with others, but to see the landscape itself.

The Water

The water at Gerontas is so clear that it shines. The dark volcanic sand below makes deep jewel-toned blues, while the shallower areas near the shore shine in pale turquoise. It's warm, calm and just right for long, slow swims, floating in the sun, snorkelling along the edges of the cliffs and going into the shadows of the sea cave. When you swim under the arch, you feel something almost sacred. The rock is above you, the water is below you and the light is bouncing off of everything. It is one of the most awe-inspiring places to swim on the island.

Finding and Exploring

Gerontas invites you to wander, but not too far. Just slowly, quietly and with care. These are the easy, perfect things to do. You swim through the arch and into the soft shade of the cliffs, look around the caves that have been carved out along the waterline. Listen to the waves fold and unfold while you sit in the sand. From morning to afternoon, watch how the light changes on the rock faces. Find your own quiet spot, walk along the curve of the bay and of course, the view is always amazing, no matter where you go.

Getting There by Sea

Gerontas is also a popular place for day trips and private boat trips that explore the southern coast. When you come to the beach from the water, everything looks different: the cliffs look taller, the arch looks more dramatic and the colours of the rock are more vivid. Gerontas looks like a natural amphitheatre made of white stone and dark sand when you look at it from the sea. The only things around it are sky and water. This way to the beach is often one of the best parts of exploring the southern coast.

What to Bring

  • Water

  • Fruit or light food

  • Protection from the sun

  • A towel

  • Shoes that are comfortable for the walk down

Why Gerontas Stays with You

Gerontas makes an impression not because of what you do there, but because of how it feels. The landscape here is not just a view; it is a presence. The sea here is more than just water; it's clear. Silence is not the same as nothingness; it is peace. Gerontas is one of the last beaches on Milos where you can stand, breathe and feel the island just as it is: raw, volcanic, timeless and always beautiful.
